There is a new iOS based App that has been approved and was due to launch today by SkyFire which will enable Flash videos on the iPhone.
The App was actually released early last night, and has been temporarily removed from the App Store. The reason being the App was that popular it has degraded the user experience, SkyFire have commented saying they are increasing their infrastructure and it will be back very soon.
This is fantastic news, Flash is something that has been missing from the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch range from the start, but for good reason, Apple report that Adobe's Flash is the number one reason Macs crash and so for that reason they decided not to allow it on their mobile devices. It also uses a lot of processing power and produces a lot of excess heat.
This new application is fantastic in how it works, it is a browser for your iPhone built on Safari's back end, but with added features. There are a lot of cool features strapped onto the basic Safari but still giving the Safari experience that we know and love. More of these features can be seen in the YouTube video on their website, but the most important and key feature to us is the ability to play Flash videos on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
The way this is done is the application loads the flash file on the company's servers, it then converts it to HTML 5 (the open standard which Apple are trying to convert the world to anyway) and sends the resulting video back to the users device.
It would be great if all websites were to change their videos to HTML 5 instead of Flash ultimately, but we can't see this happening and so mobile users are missing out on millions of websites, now with this App priced at $2.99 users can view any flash video files straight on their mobile device. SkyFire have said that this is an introductory offer and the price will more than likely increase, so when it comes back make sure you grab it.
