Nokia stock gains on CEO switch

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Nokia's stock rallied Friday after the Finnish mobile phone maker said it was replacing its chief executive with an executive from Microsoft Corp.

Nokia's board of directors said it hired Stephen Elop for the position of president and CEO. Currently the head of Microsoft's (MSFT, Fortune 500) business division, Elop is scheduled to begin his new job on Sept. 21.

Investors applauded the news, sending Nokia's (NOK) stock up about 2% in the first half hour of trading.

Nokia's current CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, is scheduled to step down on Sept. 20, the company said. He will also vacate his position on the company's board of directors, though he will continue to chair the board of Nokia Siemens Networks "in a non-executive capacity," the company said.

The company said the incoming CEO has held executive positions at Juniper Networks (JNPR), Adobe Systems Inc (ADBE). and Macromedia Inc., in addition to Microsoft. Elop has a degree in computer engineering and management from McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, his home country.

"The time is right to accelerate the company's renewal; to bring in new executive leadership with different skills and strengths in order to drive company success," said Jorma Ollila, chairman of Nokia's board of directors. "The Nokia board believes that Stephen has the right industry experience and leadership skills to realize the full potential of Nokia."
A Nokia spokeswoman in Finland would not say why the company was replacing its CEO. But in July, the company reported ongoing profit declines for the second quarter and Kallasvuo spoke of "continuing competitive challenges."

Nokia's competitors include Apple Inc. (AAPL, Fortune 500), maker of the iPhone, and Research in Motion (RIMM), maker of the BlackBerry

"MAKE.MONEY.FAST" is a title of an electronically forwarded chain letter which became so infamous that the term is now used to describe all sorts of chain letters forwarded over the Internet, by e-mail spam or Usenet newsgroups. In anti-spammer slang, the name is often abbreviated "MMF".

History
The original "MAKE.MONEY.FAST" letter was written around 1988 by a person who used the name Dave Rhodes. Biographical details are not certain, and it is not clear that this is even the person's actual name.

It is often said, such as in the FAQ for the net.legends Usenet group, that Rhodes was a student at Columbia Union College, a Seventh Day Adventist college in Maryland, who wrote the letter and uploaded it as a text file to a nearby BBS[1] around 1987. It is also often said[2] that Rhodes was convicted of some fraud-related crime and that as part of his sentence he had to create an anti-spam website, but no evidence of this has been found.[3] Sites that appear to be such a site, for example http://daverhodes.etee2k.net, are apocryphal.

The scam reached the Internet, where it was forwarded over e-mail and Usenet, although it was not until spamming became a major problem in 1994 that "MAKE.MONEY.FAST" exploded. It became one of the most persistent spams in existence and multiple variations have come into existence, often by spammers who change the subject of their email to "This really works!" or "You are a winner!"

The letter encouraged readers of the email to forward one dollar in cash to a list of people provided in the text, and to add their own name and address to the bottom of the list after deleting the name and address at the top. Using the theory behind pyramid schemes, the resulting chain of money flowing back and forth would supposedly deliver a reward of thousands of dollars to the ones participating in the chain, as copies of their chain spread and more and more people sent one dollar to their address.

The text of the letter originally claimed to be "perfectly legal", citing Title 18, U.S. Code, Sections 1302 (which deals with postal lotteries) and 1341 (which deals with mail fraud).[4] The U.S. Postal Inspection Service cites 18 USC 1302[5] when it asserts the illegality of chain letters, including MMF:

[Chain letters are] illegal if they request money or other items of value and promise a substantial return to the participants. Chain letters are a form of gambling, and sending them through the mail (or delivering them in person or by computer, but mailing money to participate) violates Title 18, United States Code, Section 1302, the Postal Lottery Statute.[6]
It also asserts that "[r]egardless of what technology is used to advance the scheme, if the mail is used at any step along the way, it is still illegal."[6] The U.S. Postal Inspection Service asserts the mathematical impossibility that all participants will be winners, as well as the possibilities that participants may fail to send money to the first person listed, and the perpetrator may have been listed multiple times under different addresses and names, thus ensuring that all the money goes to the same person.

As of this writing, few chain letters use the U.S. mails to transmit the money. A common chain letter suggests that the participant transfer $6 using the Paypal electronic funds transfer service to send $1 to each of 6 people. However, the mathematical impossibilities of the claims noted in the U.S. Postal Inspection Service blurb survives the change in medium and pyramid schemes are still illegal in most places around the world, possibly as investment frauds or consumer frauds or illegal lotteries.

Paypal prohibits its use for payment of membership in pyramid schemes.

MMF parodies
The chain letters follow a rigidly predefined format or template with minor variations (such as claiming to be from a retired lawyer or claiming to be selling "reports" in order to attempt to make the scheme appear lawful). They quickly became repetitive, causing them to be bait for widespread satire or parody.

There comes a point where every business considers adding a server to their network to streamline processes and make workers more productive. You may have already contacted a local business computer support provider. Most will try to sell you a server by telling you how many new features you'll be able to take advantage of. However, before making the plunge, here are some things to consider.
· Hardware cost. Servers typically cost a lot more than a standard desktop computer. Prices can range from a few thousand dollars to $10,000 +. Some servers come with built-in redundancy to keep the server running all the time, even if a given piece of hardware fails. Even though these redundancy options cost more, think of the cost to you if your server goes down in the middle of the morning and can't be repaired for 24+ hours. Most stores don't stock server parts, so a little redundancy goes a long way, even if you pay more for it up front.
· Backups. What do you do for backups now? An alluring reason for getting a server is having a central place for all your workstations to send their backups to. You still need to backup the server! Once a server is in your network and people are using it, the amount of data stored on the server will grow rapidly. You need to have some type of backup solution in place to backup the server and all it's data. One option might be setting up RAID 1, which mirrors data across multiple hard drives. Every week, you can swap out one of the drives to an off-site location. Another option would be on line backup services, but one thing to consider is those services usually charge by the size of your data you're backing up, so it can get expensive quick.
· Server software can cost a lot, especially for per-user licensing. Sure, there are a lot of very useful applications available to run on servers. But because software vendors know it's going on a server, they charge more than a pretty penny to use their software. Usually it's a cost that is renewed every year, and price is usually based on how many users you currently have using that piece of software. It might not be too bad for one application, but when you start adding everything up it's typically one of the most expensive parts of owning a server.
· More things to fail. When you add a server into your network, it's just one more thing that can break. Servers are designed in theory to be more stable than normal operating systems, but servers still rely upon microchips and solder to function. There's also a lot of coding in server applications, so you're just increasing the odds of finding an unfortunate software bug or "glitch." If your users are hosting files on the server, you have to examine your network infrastructure as well. If you have a network switch or router fail, all your workstations may lose access to anything stored on the server.
· IT Providers try to up-sell you. It may be hard to believe (sometimes not), but IT service providers are trying to make money. How can these providers make more money? By selling server software. Some software companies offer quite a nice commission to the IT provider selling the software. Sometimes, this extra commission is enough to encourage the IT companies to push this software to their clients. It's not always in the client's best interest. Another example is Microsoft requires IT providers to sell a certain amount of server-based licenses and software in order to move up in the Microsoft Partner Program. It's not just based on how competent the IT provider is, but how much software they can sell in a given year.
Having a server in your network may be a wise business choice, sometimes it's not. Choosing the right business IT support provider is arguably the most important step of the whole process. Only someone with experience in server installs and maintenance can truly know the impact financially and the reliability of certain server-based network installs. Basically, electronic commerce (EC) is the process of buying, transferring, or exchanging products, services, and/or information via computer networks, including the internet. EC can also be benifited from many perspective including business process, service, learning, collaborative, community. EC is often confused with e-business.
