iPod Touch 2G - Next Generation Tech Now

Apple is known for its penchant of slowly adding upgrades to every new product it launches in the market. With the unveiling of the second-generation iPod Touch, a handful of improvements are evident. It is now 5 grams lighter, the edges are thinner, and in place of a black metal is the shiny chrome. Overall, the look of the second-generation iPod is much more sophisticated and smooth than the older model.

External additions have also been made to the iPod Touch 2G. There's the external volume control, which allows for quicker volume adjustments, integrated speaker system, and microphone support. There is also additional software like the Genius application and Nike+ iPod. The performance has not changed, which means, Internet browsing still goes at the same decent speed and music playback is still as impressive as ever.

Probably the biggest upgrades of the iPod 2G is its enhanced battery life, which now reaches up to 14 hours and an additional one-hour for video playback. The external volume buttons saves up some battery life as you don't have to turn on your iPod Touch screen to do the adjustments. The Genius feature is also truly an intuitive element of this device since you can create play list according to your previous list of songs. You wouldn't have to worry about getting distracted in the middle of the song since the Genius feature ensures that your music stays on the right track.

The Nike+ iPod feature of this player will make fitness enthusiasts happy. There's a sensor that you will place inside your shoe. The sensor goes in sync with the Nike+ in your iPod Touch. This tracks the time and distance that you have spent running, and the calories that you were able to burn. If you think these upgrades are significant enough, iPod Touch 2G is definitely a good buy.

The New 5th Generation Apple IPods

To date, there has been a number of Apple iPod models. Well, with the release of the new iPod Video, there are now officially three iPod models for the 5th generation of iPods. The earlier 4th generation models, including the popular iPod Mini, iPod Photo, U2 and 20GB iPod are now officially history.
The three official 5G iPod models include the iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano and iPod Video. What's the difference between this new range of iPods and the previous 4G models? Broadly speaking, the differences are:
Hard Disk
Two of the new iPod models, iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano, are based on flash hard disk technology. This new hard disk is ultra slim and is able to withstand shock and vigorous movement. Unlike 4G models, this make the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano ultra slim and allow them to be used for vigorous activities, including sporting activity, dance, accidental drops, etc. Previous 4G models were less robust and vigorous activity tend to cause possible malfunction.
Battery life
Battery life on the 5G iPod has improved tremendously. One of the major complaints about 4G iPod was the short battery life(8hrs) and battery life draining away quickly after heavy use. The new iPod lasts up to 14 hrs and has a better battery lifespan.
Color is standard
Unlike 4G model, where the iPod Photo model was the only model with color, the new iPod Nano and iPod Video comes standard with color screen and playback.
Choice of video
With the new iPod Video, there is now a range of activities, including data, music, photo and video that can be supported on one iPod. Previously, video was not available as an option.
Standardized casing
The 4G iPod included the multi-color iPod mini, with a choice of pink, blue, green and silver. The only option for black was the U2 model.
Today, the colors has been standardized to black or white (except iPod Shuffle - White only). In addition, all iPod casing has been standardized to hard acrylic instead of the anionized aluminium for iPod Mini and hard acrylic for the other models.
However, the hard acrylic casing used for the 5G iPod models seems to have a tendency to scratch as reported by many iPod user websites. It is advised that a iPod casing or protector film be purchased for the new 5G iPod immediately. A good selection can be found here.
Compact Clickwheel
The iPod Clickwheel was previously a scroll wheel that was designed and supplied by a 3rd party. The new iPod clickwheels are now designed and produced by Apple itself. The functionalities are similar but users reported better response feedback.
Headphone jack
Headphone jacks for all iPod models, including the very first 1G iPod up till the 4G models, has always been on top of the iPod. The iPod Nano breaks ground by having the headphone jack at the bottom.
Which iPod model to choose?
As of this writing, the iPod Video has only been out for less than 2 weeks. The current 5G range of iPod seems to be the most complete and versatile thus far, and we can see that the 3 different models are essentially targeted at different segments of the iPod user market. A basic guide to choosing the right iPod model can be broadly classified as:
iPod Shuffle
The iPod Shuffle is obviously targeted at users who have a lower budget or those who only have an occasional need for a music player. The Shuffle comes without a screen and user can only choose to listen to music in a sequence or have it shuffled randomly. Because of it's lower price, this model has become a choice for those who desire for an iPod but may not have the neccessary budget.
iPod Nano
The iPod Nano is now the mainstream iPod model with the exit of 4G iPod models. With a size and thickness slightly larger than a credit card, this is now a runaway favorite iPod model. Users have a choice of data, music and photo with this colored screen iPod.
iPod Video
The newest kid on the block, the iPod Video, is desired by those with a higher budget or who wish to watch video on their iPod. It has a slightly larger screen than the iPod Nano and play a crisp 30 fps video display. With not many iPod videos available for download as yet, we'll need to see if this model can overtake the iPod Nano as the mainstream iPod model.
Katherine Xie has 4 iPods starting from the 2G model. She runs a popular website, http://www.smart-ipod-ideas.com, that gives tips on iPods as well as showcase quality iPod accessories from Japan. Please feel free to distribute this article as long as credit and reference is made to her website.

Evolution of the iPod

The tiny, white gadget had a 5 GB hard drive, 160×128 pixel LCD screen, and put “1,000 songs in your pocket” for $399. (See video below of Steve Jobs introducing the iPod for the first time.) The innovative design was light years ahead of its time, and the iPod has continued to evolve since.
We’ve seen new models introduced - iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, iPod Touch - with better screens, more storage, and a boatload of features we never dreamed about nearly a decade ago.
On April 9, 2007, Apple said it had sold 100 million iPods, making it the fastest selling music player in history. And the momentum hasn’t stopped. At Apple’s recent music event in San Francisco, Jobs was on hand to announce new iPod Shuffles, iPod Nanos, and iPod Touches.
With Apple’s replenished iPod lineup, we take a look at how far the iPod has come in less than a decade.

New iPod Touch 4G: Internal Hardware Revealed – Huge Battery

When Apple revealed the 4th generation iPod Touch most people were concerned about the display, camera and capacity, however one thing that went pretty much unnoticed was its impressive battery life.
The new iPod Touch’s battery life is quite staggering, especially when you consider it takes just 2 hours for a fast charge (80%), and 4 hours for a full charge.
A full charge is said to give you 40 hours of audio playback or 7 hours of video playback, you are probably wondering what makes this possible.
Luckily the guys over at ifixit recently disassembled the iPod Touch 4G, you can see the three page teardown here, what struck me the most was the size of the battery, we have embedded a photo below showing its size.
According to ifixit this battery has a capacity of 3.44 watt hours, which combined with iOS 4 gives it superior battery life than one of its biggest competitors the Zune HD.
I do think it is getting to the point where devices such as the iPod Touch has more than enough battery life, do you?

The new iPod Nano 6G unveiled in Detail

The rumors about the new iPod nano 6G have been pretty accurate. The new iPod nano offers a tiny touchscreen and a square design. It looks very, very sexy.
Apple’s Multi-Touch interface on the iPod nano lets users navigate their music collection by simply tapping or swiping a finger on the display. Nearly half the size and weight of the previous generation, the new iPod nano features a polished aluminum and glass enclosure with a built-in clip, making it instantly wearable. The new iPod nano features Genius Mixes, the ability to create and edit playlists, a built-in FM radio with live pause and up to 24 hours of music playback on a single battery charge.
The new iPod nano with Apple’s Multi-Touch interface allows users to access their songs, artists, albums and playlists with a tap or swipe of their finger on the display. Holding down a finger returns the user to the Home screen, and users can easily use two fingers to rotate the screen if it is clipped onto their clothing upside down. Users can also customize their Home screen by simply dragging icons from other screens onto the Home screen.
iPod nano also features Shake to Shuffle, giving music lovers the ability to shake their iPod nano to shuffle to a new song in their music library. With its built-in FM radio, iPod nano lets you listen to your favorite radio stations, and live pause lets you pause and resume playing your favorite FM radio shows without missing a beat.
The new iPod nano will be available next week for a suggested price of $149 for the 8GB model and $179 for the 16GB model. Both models are available in silver, graphite, blue, green, orange and pink through the Apple Store.

As reported earlier today, the Game Center for iOS 4.1 devices won't be compatible on iPhone 3G. Apart from that, this update also brings TV Show Rentals for the iOS 4.1 running devices.
The update also brings music-based social network Ping for the iPhone and iPod touch devices. Follow devices are compatible with the iOS 4.1 update:

iOS 4.1 for iPhone, iPod Touch released

The latest software for the iPhone and iPod Touch is available starting Wednesday for download from Apple.
The company foreshadowed the arrival of iOS 4.1 at its annual fall press event last week and included an overview of the latest features. The download is free via iTunes for iPhone and iPod Touch owners.
Besides upgrades to new features for games, photos, and high-definition videos, Apple is using this software update to zap several bugs at once.
The proximity sensor problems, the painfully slow performance of the iPhone 3G with iOS 4.0, Bluetooth connectivity problems with certain car stereos and headsets (that CNET noted as soon as the iPhone 4 was released), as well as issues related to the Nike+iPod software, will be issues of the past with 4.1 installed, Steve Jobs promised last week.
Other upgrades in iOS 4.1 include: the ability to upload HD videos over Wi-Fi, TV show rentals on iTunes from an iPhone or iPod Touch, new HDR (high dynamic range) photo function, and the delayed GameCenter.
GameCenter was announced in April at the iOS 4.0 press event, but was not included in the initial release of the software. GameCenter is a social-networking feature that allows iPhone and iPod Touch users to play games on their devices against friends in real-time.
CNET's Kent German will have a hands-on review of the latest software for iPhone and iPod Touch as well as screenshots later today, so be sure to check back.

New iPod Touch Has a Vibrator

Steve Jobs wasn’t kidding when he called the iPod Touch the “iPhone without a phone”. We have been calling it that for years, of course, but with each iteration the two iOS devices get closer and closer in terms of features. Now a vibrating alert has been added to the the Touch.
The first iPod Touch was a chunky slab of metal and glass, and didn’t even come with a hardware volume-control. As the product-line has evolved, Apple has added not only a volume switch but a speaker (the latest version has a proper speaker, not the tinny thing hidden in the headphone socket like last year’s model), a pair of cameras, a gyroscope and a microphone. The only the Touch now lacks are the cellular radio, the GPS and the mute-switch on the side.
The vibrator shows up as an alert for FaceTime on the iPod accessibility page:
If somebody wants to start a video call with you, you’ll receive an invitation — along with a vibrating alert — on your iPod touch asking you to join.
The obvious use though (no, not that one) is for games. Tactile feedback has been around on bigger consoles for years, and as the Touch is being pushed as a gaming device, adding in a vibrator seems like a great idea.
Which makes me wonder how long it will be before the Touch really is a phone-less iPhone. Is it possible that the next step is to add in cellular data, just like the iPad 3G, leaving out only the actual telephony hardware? That would still suit Job’s other nickname for the Touch, which is the “iPhone without a contract.” Couple that with FaceTime and who needs a cellphone anyway?

New Apple TV is iPod Touch in sheep's clothing

Computerworld - The inside of the new Apple TV likely resembles the interior of the iPod Touch, a move that allowed Apple to dramatically cut costs, a Canadian research company said today.
What's unknown, said Jeffrey Brown, who heads the business intelligence group at Ottawa-based UBM TechInsights, is whether the new model has the memory necessary to store downloaded applications, and Bluetooth connectivity that could be used by game controllers.
TechInsight's estimate pegged the Apple TV's "bill of materials" (BOM) at approximately $50, including packaging and the device's miniature remote control.
Brown's team hasn't torn apart an actual Apple TV -- the device doesn't go on sale until the end of this month -- but based its estimate on current information and a knowledge of component costs.

On Wednesday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the smaller and less expensive Apple TV, which streams rented movies and TV programs to television sets. Apple's priced the new model at $99, a 57% discount from the original Apple TV's $229.
Some of the savings came at the expense of Intel, which had provided a pair of chipsets and the microprocessor in the original model, said Brown.
The new Apple TV is powered by an A4 application processor, the Apple-designed system on a chip (SOC) made by Samsung and built around an ARM CPU. The A4 also powers the iPod Touch, iPhone 4 and iPad.
Going with the A4, which Brown estimated costs Apple $15, let Apple drop the Intel Pentium M processor inside the older Apple TV. By yanking other components, including the hard drive, standard computer memory and most of its input-output functions, Apple was able to ditch other Intel chipsets that managed memory and I/O.
"We figure that the Intel parts cost Apple $50 to $60," said Brown.
Even at the lower price, Apple will turn a profit on the smaller Apple TV. "They're going to make money off this," said Brown, who added that the revenues from content rentals won't be necessary to put the Apple TV into the black.
Other cost savings came from discarding the original's hard drive and fan, and by drastically reducing the size of the logic board that holds the device's chips.
Apple TV
Redesigned Apple TV includes built-in HDMI, Wi-Fi and Ethernet and is one-fourth the size of earlier models.
"We estimate that the board area in the new Apple TV is ten times smaller than in the original," said Brown. "It will be very similar to the size of the boards in the iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch."
Brown said TechInsights is "very confident" that when it opens up an Apple TV later this month it will find that "the guts will essentially be the same as the iPod Touch."
But there will still be mysteries to solve. "How much [flash] memory will be there, that's one," said Brown. "And does it have Bluetooth on board?"
Answering those questions will hint at Apple's future plans for Apple TV, Brown argued.
If the Apple TV includes plenty of memory, users can assume that Apple will offer downloadable content from the App Store, most likely games. And if the device offers integrated Bluetooth, as does the iPod Touch, game controllers could appear.
"They'll tell us whether the Apple TV has, or will have, a gaming or application use," said Brown.
It's possible, of course, that TechInsight will find those components inside the Apple TV, but that they won't be utilized by the device. "Apple always holds something back for the next version," Brown pointed out.
But he was optimistic that App Store downloads and gaming will be possible. "If they decided to keep everything on the Web, they could have shrunk it even more," said Brown.

The new iPod Nano turned into iWatch

The new iPod Nano turned into iWatch
Who have thought that Apple has created another product out of the newly launched iPod Nano, it can be called the iWatch, presumably iPod Nano turned into wristwatch. We like the idea, and we mean it, if the Nano will have a designer bracelet holder to turn it into instant watch that doubles out your music player, well this could be a sure hit, right geek?

It shouldn't be an intended idea from Apple for the iPod Nano to be used this way, but common, though the above picture isn't that cool we can give our kudos to Kei Ogikubo for this Flickr photo. We'll not be surprised if this idea turns commercial.
