Apple could be gearing up for one hell of a year. In 2010, the iPad broke the tablet market wide open and gave customers a new choice for portable computing. In 2011, UBS Investment Research believes that Apple will continue to make history by selling 28 million of their iOS slates. (eWeek)
The iPad is apparently "cannibalizing" low-end PC sales. Customers are looking at netbooks (cumbersome form-factor, low power, long battery life) and low-end laptops (often spotty survival times, crappy battery life) and choosing a device that, while more limited than either option, is incredibly simple and convenient to use. The iPad also has the benefit of packing in MUCH more battery life than any stock notebooks and most netbooks. The iPad's success shouldn't surprise anyone. Apple may be the first company to serve the low-end PC market that actually gives the consumer what they want. The iPad is a personal computer in the most basic sense. It connects the user to the things they care about, doesn't confuse them with excess options and works long enough that they don't need to charge it up halfway through a work day.
